Are Steam Machines Done For?

Valve has removed the Steam Machine section from their online marketplace.
Although PC gamers can still buy a boutique machine through Valve's website, or from a manufacturer, the console-competitors appear to be on their way out.
Initially marketed as a living room device for PC gamers, Steam Machines were held in check by Valve, as the software company fell behind it's hardware partners.
The form-factor PCs were suppose to ship with Valve's SteamOS, a version of Linux, but that never coalesced.
Instead of making up ground, Valve shifted gears for taking on the console market by releasing the Steam Link, which is a smaller box that streams games from a PC to a TV.
