Auckland resident Danielle Silich said she was “shocked” when her car was overtaken on March 29 by a school bus with a side door open and students’ legs perched on the vehicle’s side step.Silich shared footage of the incident, which she described as being filmed on a road with a 100 kilometer speed limit in northern New Zealand. It shows the van’s side door ajar and feet visible on the side step.“They proceeded to drive like this for another 15 mins before closing the door because it started raining. Once the rain stopped the legs were back out with the door wide open. So dangerous,” she wrote in a Facebook post about the footage. She added that she had contacted the police before recording the video, as well as contacting the school.Local media reports, which feature additional footage from the front of the bus, as well as a Snapchat video recorded in the bus, reported that the students were from Whangarei Girls’ High School, and that the driver was a parent of one of the students. The school’s principal, Anne Cooper, told local media she was “grateful” to Silich for bringing the matter to her attention, and was quoted as saying it was a “miracle” that none of the girls on board were killed.
