Whole Foods in the Washington DC area have started selling “Sushi sandwiches.” The sandwiches are based on the Japanese dish onigirazu. Onigirazu was invented in 1991 in a manga series. Tochi Ueyama featured the sandwiches in his manga titled “Cooking Papa.” The sandwiches have gained in popularity in recent years as aesthetically pleasing Instagram bait. The sandwiches come with your typical roll fillings and are often cut in triangles.
