'Super Gonorrhea' Sees Its First Confirmed Case Public health officials in the U.K. reported a man has acquired the multi-drug resistant strain of the sexually transmitted disease. The gonorrhea did not respond to azithromyci, the antibiotic commonly used to treat it, or ceftriaxone, which the World Health Organization calls a "last-resort treatment." David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, to CNN The patient is currently being treated with a powerful antibiotic typically used for “serious infections in hospitalized patients," according to the National Institutes of Health. His next test results are due in mid-April.
