Hi! Im entertaining expert Jeanne Benedict here at Jacob Maarse Florist with some ideas for you to decorate with flowers this season. Picking a theme for holidays and parties is one of the most enjoyable aspects of entertaining for me. Ill start with a color or an object that I want to use in my design and build it up from there, and one of the easiest ways to do that is with the place setting. Once youve got something in mind, take those items to your florist and he or she is going to be able to create expertly arranged flowers that are going to take your holiday event to the next level. \r

First up, I just have a couple of white plates that Ive layered, and then to really take it into the holiday theme, I have this pinecone Ive painted orange. Im just in love with pinecones this holiday season. So, Im going to put that right on the plate. Now to match the orange and to give the place setting a little bit more personality, I have this blue piece of scrapbook paper with snowflakes on it — I just think this looks great when I put it right under the plate as a placemat. Boom — something different. Its fresh because of the orange and its classic because of the snowflakes and because of the pinecone. Now youll take this to your florist and he or she will be able to design something fabulous because based on this color scheme and this idea.\r

Next up — I got a bunch of green-on-green. I have this green damask runner, green crackled glazed plate and then a napkin Ive just created a Christmas tree out of. Napkins are one of the most affordable ways to give your tabletop personality. Now the great thing about going with an all-green table setting is that your florist can pair that with anything — leaves are green — its just a natural backdrop for flowers so consider that for something a little bit more classic.\r

Now for my next setting, its elegant, its classic, and its all based on this beautiful piece of fabric that I use every single year. The place setting has a gold charger, a white plate and then I just personalized the setting using adhesive letter stickers on the rim. And then to give it a holiday touch, some bells — ding! Or you can use an ornament — you know, go into your Christmas decorations and find something appropriate. Now flowers for this setting, I would go with something white, something brown or round, maybe orchids and then maybe a touch of gold, like gold leaves for example. The other great thing about golds and metallics — they really catch the candlelight so everything in the room sparkles.\r

This next design is so fun. Ive created brown and while houndstooth paper from an image I found online and then used it as a liner for this base plate and to make a made a reindeer on top. I love this idea, say, for a holiday lunch at a restaurant. You bring the reindeer and then your florist can deliver the flowers right to the restaurant. The other idea for this reindeer is to use it as a gift tag in a bouquet of flowers. I personally love a hostess gift thats delivered to my house before or after a party. Its great during the holidays because you know that when guests drop by, you know your house is going to look and smell great because youve got this great arrangement sitting on the table. \r

And then finally — supper fun. I call this log cabin chic. And its just red and white checkered cloth, a piece of wood that I personalized with the name Piper, some rock salt and then a green painted pinecone. This would be so fun for a caroling party with guests gathering at your house before or after singing, or just say for an open house. And the reason I wanted to show you this is because it would pair beautifully with evergreen — an evergreen garland down the center of your table; a pine bow over your archways or on your mantle. And florists can help you with that, too. They can adorn an evergreen bow with flowers — it looks absolutely beautiful and fresh for the holiday season, or even a wreath. Whether youre going to use these ideas for place settings on a table or for food platters, expertly arranged flowers from your local florist are going to enhance the ambiance of your formal dinner parties, your casual get-togethers and your magical and memorable holiday events. \r
