A pair of identical twins have opened up about how their lives were turned upside down when one of the siblings, who were born as boys, revealed she was transgender.\r

Jonas and Nicole Maines, who are both 18, were born twin boys named Jonas and Wyatt. But at an early age, Wyatt, who has always identified as a girl, began talking about his desire to transition - and eventually took hormones and underwent ual reassignment surgery to physically become female.\r

Now, the twins and their parents have shared details about their lives in a new interview with People, as well as in Pulitzer-Prize winner Amy Ellis Nutts new book,Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family.\r

Their parents - Kelly, 54, and Wayne, 57 - adopted the then-twin boys at birth after struggling with infertility.\r

Wyatt always felt like a girl, something his parents started recognizing when he was two. Hed say that he hated his penis and asked when it would fall off. He also wanted to wear princess dresses and grow out his hair; he called himself a girl-boy.\r

Whenever we were playing dress up she always wanted to be the girl, Jonas said. She always played with the dolls.\r
A loving brother, Jonas didnt question Wyatts preferences. And he wasnt just playing along, either - Jonas said it was natural for him to treat Nicole like a girl.\r

Mom Kelly was also pretty accepting from the beginning. Though she was scared about her childs future, she let Wyatt wear pink dresses, play with Barbies, and watch The Little Mermaid.\r
