Flat earth rocketeer finally blasts off in homemade rocket

AMBOY, CALIFORNIA — Flat-earther 'Mad' Mike Hughes finally blasted off in his homemade rocket.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the former limo driver spent years building the steam-powered rocket out of salvaged garage parts, and meant to launch it last November.

But the 61-year-old had to redesign his baby after Big Government stepped in. And between that and technical trouble, the launch date had to be forced back.

Saturday seemed like it would be another failure to launch, but old man Hughes was sick of hearing people say he'd chickened out. So he fired up the rocket just after 3 p.m. and blasted himself into the sky, 1,875 feet above the Mojave Desert.

Minutes later, and with two parachutes deployed, the rocket landed with a thud some 1,500 feet from the launch site.

Its front was broken in two places, but the man inside came out in one piece — dinged up with an aching back. Guess someone learned about gravity!

Mr. Flat Earth didn't go high enough to prove his theory though, but claims that's what his next project is for. So stay tuned kids, or...not.
