About Kankaria Lake Front
The historical Kankaria Lake having a periphery of about 2.5 Km has been the symbol of Ahmadabad’s identity since almost 500 years. The historic lake around an island garden called Naginawadi has been an evergreen outing place for the people of Ahmedabad. Along with the adjoining Zoo, Balvatika, Aquarium and surrounding hill gardens, it offered a complete entertainment centre. Given an expanse of around 4 sq km of permanently filled water body, it has acted as the lungs of the relatively lower income South Eastern part of the city.

History

The lake is said to have been built during the Solanki period. There are various versions of its origin. The lake is said to have been built next to the Kanmukhteswar Temple. Another version attributes the lake to the Kankana Devi from which it takes its name. A more popular version, based on the existing plate at the site commemorating this event, it was built by Sultan Kutubuddin Shah in 15th century, with the work completed in 1451. According to this plate, its name is placed as Hauj-E-Kutub. (Pond of Kutub). Whether the lake existed before this and was only widened or deepened in 1452 or whether it was created from scratch at that time is something that still remains unresolved.
