St. Andrew's Episcopal School is one of more than 100 in the state and Washington, D.C. area that endorsed the call upon "our president, our Congress, and our state leaders to enact specific, rigorous measures to reduce gun violence in our society, particularly in our schools." Specific measures mentioned include "a robust system of registration and background checks, with a particular eye toward weapons capable of rapidly firing a vast number of deadly shots…stronger mental health services and more effective communication among agencies responsible for the well-being of children, adults and families." "What we do not need is to arm our teachers with guns, which is dangerous and antithetical to our profession as educators," the letter further notes. Arming teachers is among the proposed measures the president has continued to promote.
Trump has also spoken in support of strengthening of background checks, but has wavered on his initial suggestion of raising the minimum purchase age on select weapons from 18 to 21. The open letter endorsed by his son's school and others was released on Wednesday as students across the nation participated in school walkouts to appeal for stronger gun control measures. Those events came one month after a 19-year-old gunman armed with a legally purchased semi-automatic weapon claimed 17 lives at a Parkland, Florida school.
