Twitter debuted its blue checkmark to signify verified users in 2009. Initially used as a way to identify celebrities, athletes and public figures, the badge was then rolled out to journalists and folks from other careers. They think of it as credibility. Twitter stands behind this person... Twitter believes that this person is someone that — what they’re saying is great and authentic, which is not at all what we mean by the checkmark.
