JioFiber is coming. The question is when? And of that answer probably even Jio is not very sure right now. It has been revealed earlier -- India Today Tech exclusively wrote on it -- that JioFiber was undergoing testing in limited trials in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. But its formal launch has not yet happened. However, it is possible that after Reliance Jio's purchase of assets owned by Reliance Communications (RCom), JioFiber may soon get a launch date. The deal between Jio and Rcom was announced on Thursday evening.
According to the deal, Jio is reportedly buying assets from Rcom for Rs 24,000 crore. These assets include 122.4 units of 4G airwaves in the 850, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands, 1,78,000 route km of fiber and over cell towers 43,000 towers. While the 4G spectrum will help Jio consolidate its already sizeable presence in the wireless market, it is the fiber network of over 1,78,000 route km that may help the company in a big way in its future plan.
Creating fiber network is not only expensive but also time consuming because it requires laying down cables. And without the fiber network, the JioFiber may not be able to offer the speed of 100mbps that it is promising to start with.
