Hyundai’s new Kona Electric to boast 470 km of battery range
Hyundai pulled the wraps off its second-ever electric vehicle, the Kona Electric, ahead of the SUV’s full debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week, boasting it’ll be able to drive 470 km on a single charge.
The Kona Electric will come in short-range and long-range models, the latter being able to drive the above-mentioned 470 km on battery, and the former managing a more modest 300 km.
Pricing details have not yet been revealed, and it’s not certain whether the vehicle, to go on sale in Europe and South Korea this year, will make its way to Canada.
The short-range Kona Electric comes fitted with a 39.2-kWh battery that takes over six hours to fully charge plugged into a wall outlet, but that can hit 80-percent battery capacity in 54 minutes hooked up to a DC fast charger. The 99-kW electric motor sprints the compact SUV to 100 km/h from zero in roughly 9.0 seconds.
The 150-kW motor in the long-range trim shaves about two seconds off that acceleration time, and comes with a 64-kWh battery pack. Charging takes about three hours longer because of the higher capacity.
Both trims of the Kona Electric come with semi-autonomous and active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning and standard heads-up display. The Kona Electric closely resembles its gasoline-powered sibling, though it is slightly taller and longer and comes with a two-tone roof.
The Kona Electric, in either trim, outperforms Hyundai’s first electric-car effort, the Ioniq, and seems well-positioned to take on rivals like the Chevrolet Bolt.
