This Bride Used Her Wedding To Empower Women Everywhere
  • 6 years ago
This woman didn’t wear any makeup at her wedding to make a statement. Dr. Tasnim Jara’s wedding photo went viral after she posted a caption explaining why she opted out of makeup on her big day. She explains further in an interview with Newlywed Mag, “I was troubled by the singular image of a bride that our society has - with tons of makeup, a weighty dress and mounds of jewelry weighing her down. Don’t be fooled, the lavish image of a bride does not represent the financial well-being or agency of a woman in the family.” Jara called out the double standards that brides are held to on the day of their marriage adding that, “If a girl wants to use make-up, jewelry and expensive clothes…I am all for that. But it is a problem when she loses her agency…when society forces her to doll up and look like a different person, it gives a message that the authentic look of a girl isn’t good enough for her own wedding.” So far, her post has over 25K shares, receiving tons of support form the internet. Jara is also the president of the nonprofit Aroggo, which works to bring health care to the poor in Bangladesh - this badass bride isn’t all talk. “People may call it simple, but it was very special to me, for what I believe in and what it means to me.”
