Who is Jeff Sessions? For one, he is the 84th Attorney General of the United States.

He was born in Selma, Alabama, and his full name is Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III after, not one, but two notable confederates — Jefferson Davis and Pierre Beauregard. His career in politics began in 1975, as an Associate U.S. Attorney in the Southern district of Alabama. He became noted for his antagonistic relationship with race in a 1985 voter fraud case against several civil rights advocates. In 1986, Ronald Reagan nominated Sessions for federal Judge — but many colleagues forewarned that he used the n-word and joked about the Ku Klux Klan being “ok” until he found out they smoked pot. He was denied the position — even by a Republican-led panel, but that didn’t stop him from rising the ranks into the Senate.

In 2016, he was the first senator to endorse Trump. The president nominated him to be Attorney General, and this time he was confirmed Just a day after being confirmed, Sessions recused himself from overseeing the FBI’s investigation into collusions with Russia. He has denied that he was involved in several meetings with Russians — but has also lawyered up since denying those claims.
