President Trump has suggested that an armed deputy may have failed to act during the recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida because he didn't "love the children."
At a press conference on Friday, Trump told reporters, "A security guard doesn't know the children, doesn't love the children. This man standing outside of the school the other day doesn't love the children, probably doesn't know the children."
Instead, the president has expressed support for training and arming school faculty because, in his words, "the teachers love their children."
His comments were made in the wake of an announcement by the Broward County Sheriff's Office that Deputy Scot Peterson, a school resource officer, "never went in" after the shooting began.
The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, 19, ended up killing 17 people.
In separate comments made outside the White House, Trump said about Peterson, "He certainly did a poor job, there's no question about that."
"That's the case where somebody was outside, they're trained, they didn't react properly under pressure or they were a coward," the president added.
Peterson has since resigned.
