Amnesty International released its 2017 annual report on Thursday, grouping President Trump with some of the world's most infamous autocrats. Amnesty notes, "…leaders such as al-Sisi, Duterte, Maduro, Putin, Trump and Xi are callously undermining the rights of millions." The leaders listed are those of Egypt, the Philippines, Venezuela, Russia, the U.S., and China. The larger topic being addressed is the global political climate and the apparent growing disregard for human rights.  "The specters of hatred and fear now loom large in world affairs, and we have few governments standing up for human rights in these disturbing times," Salil Shetty, the organization's secretary general, notes. The report specifically cites Trump's early 2017 travel ban targeting people from Muslim-majority countries, calling the measure a "transparently hateful move."
Amnesty also touches upon the hope found in the public's reaction to that and other such moves, stating, "As President Trump takes actions that violate human rights at home and abroad, activists from across the country remind us that the fight for universal human rights has always been waged and won by people in their communities."
