Wine has already been linked to better heart, colon, and brain health, but its potential wonders don't stop there. A recent study suggests the beverage may also help fend off cavities and gum disease. To determine what effects the polyphenols found in wine have on bacteria that tends to linger on teeth and bring about cavities, periodontal disease, and dental plaque, the team tested a variety of forms and concentrations. A release from the American Chemical Society notes the substances included "two red wine polyphenols, as well as commercially available grape seed and red wine extracts." The isolated red wine polyphenols showed the greatest overall effectiveness, and appeared to be even more successful when combined with "Streptococcus dentisani, which is believed to be an oral probiotic." "The researchers also showed that metabolites formed when digestion of the polyphenols begins in the mouth might be responsible for some of these effects," according to the release.
