The White House has indicated that President Trump is open to improved background checks for gun sales.

The White House has suggested that President Trump is supportive of measures that would improve federal background checks for gun buyers, notes Fox News. "The President spoke to Senator [John] Cornyn on Friday about the bi-partisan bill he and Sen. [Chris] Murphy introduced to improve Federal Compliance with Criminal Background check Legislation," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.  "While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system," Sanders added.  Trump's reported backing of such measures follows the February 14 mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
According to the New York Times, Nikolas Cruz,19, has since confessed to the shooting which resulted in 17 deaths.  Trump has since largely refrained from discussions involving more restrictions despite the growing public outcry for tougher gun laws.  Survivors of the school shooting are among the most vocal advocates for legislative solutions to the nation's gun violence problem.
