Sony Had the Chance to Buy 'Black Panther' and 'Iron Man' and Turned It Down According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony had the chance to buy the movies back in 1998 when purchasing the rights to Spider-Man. Marvel didn't want to part with Spider-Man and instead counter-offered with the rights to multiple comic-book characters including Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Black Panther and more. Nobody gives a s*** about any of the other Marvel characters. Go back and do a deal for only Spider-Man. In the end, Sony got the rights to Spider-Man and a percentage of revenue from other movies for $10 million. Of course, Marvel would eventually go make an entire cinematic universe with multiple superheroes, including Spider-Man.
