Obama Calls For ‘Long Overdue, Common Sense Gun-Safety Laws’ After Florida Shooting

Former President Barack Obama on Thursday tweeted about the Florida school shooting.

Former President Barack Obama urged people to take greater steps toward keeping the nation's children safe in the wake of Wednesday's Parkland, Florida school shooting, "We are grieving with Parkland. But we are not powerless," he tweeted on Thursday. "Caring for our kids is our first job. And until we can honestly say that we're doing enough to keep them safe from harm, including long overdue, common-sense gun safety laws that most Americans want, then we have to change."  President Trump has commented on the tragedy as well, focusing on another aspect of the issue--the alleged shooter's mental health.  "So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior," Trump wrote on Twitter. "Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!"  19-year-old Nikolas Cruz is suspected of opening fire inside Broward County's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, claiming at least 17 lives.
