Salon mining Monera via ad-blockers' computers

SAN FRANCISCO — News website Salon.com has a hot new take on how to deal with revenue sucking users of ad-block.

When ad-blockers visit the site, they're now asked to give over extra computing power to help Salon mine the cryptocurrency Monero via Coinhive. This can cause users' computers to heat up. So much so, Salon's FAQ on the opt-in process has a section labelled: "Why are my fans turning on?".

Coinhive software is often associated with hackers, malware and cryptojacking. Cryptojacking is where your computer is used covertly to mine cryptocurrency, but with Salon it all looks above board.

Salon says the process will only run while consenting ad-blockers are browsing the site and the site remains open.
