Opening Ceremony 2018 Olympics - Katie Couric (NBC) about the Netherlands and ice skating
  • 6 jaar geleden
Why are the Dutch good at skating?

According to misinformed Katie Couric of NBC, it’s because skating is an “important mode of transportation in a city like Amsterdam, which sits at sea level (as you all know), and has lots of canals that can freeze in the winter. So as long as those canals have existed the Dutch have skated on them to get from place to place.”

Except ... it isn’t true. Ice skating is not an important mode of transportation in the Netherlands. Biking? Yes. But ice skating? No. Because it hardly ever freezes in the Netherlands. When it does, it’s not cold enough/cold long enough to put more than a thin crust of ice on water. If you’re lucky (and we haven’t been in the past years), there’s at most one day/one week per year that ice skating is possible - and even then you won’t be skating on the Amsterdam canals...
