If you look after the family rather than work for an income there are a number of benefits you could potentially claim.

Universal Credit

Replaces 6 means-tested benefits and tax credits:
- Jobseekers Allowance
- Housing Benefit
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Income-based Employment & Support Allowance
- Income Support

Universal Credit is paid directly into your bank account. The amount you get is income-related. More details at bit.ly/about-universal-credit/.

Benefits for Families

Help with raising children that includes:
- Benefits for pregnant women or with newborns
- Benefits for partners of women with newborns
- Benefits for adopters of children
- Benefits for foster parents

Maternity Benefits

You may qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance if you are having a baby.

Paternity Benefits

Fathers may be eligible for Statutory Paternity Pay for 2 weeks after the birth of a child. Not eligible? You may still qualify for Income Support in some cases.

Child Benefit

Most people in the UK will qualify for Child Benefit. Guardians may qualify for Guardian's Allowance instead. Many parents can also claim Child Tax Credit even if they are working. If your child suffers a disability then ask about Disability Living Allowance.

State Pension

Eligibility depends on having made enough National Insurance Contributions (NICs). New rules mean that to get the full state pension you must have made 35 years of NICs. Unless you have made 10 years NICs you won't get any state pension. If you are concerned about your qualification for a State Pension visit Gov.uk/State-Pension-Statement or call 0845 3000 168.
