HUALIEN, TAIWAN — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Taiwan has left at least two people dead and more than 200 injured.
The quake struck at 11:50 local time 18.3 km off the coast from Hualien, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau.
At least five buildings have collapsed, two bridges are closed and sections of two highways have been temporarily closed to traffic, the Taiwan News reported.
Around 40,000 homes are without water.
The basement and ground floor of the 10-story Marshal Hotel collapsed after the quake. One staff member was rescued, while two others are still trapped.
Government agencies and the army have been called in for emergency rescues.
