Hackers using fake cryptocurrency apps to steal money, personal data

SAN FRANCISCO — Hackers are using malicious cryptocurrency apps to steal money and personal data from Apple and Google apps stores, according to a new study.
Researchers from internet security firm RiskIQ looked at more than 18,000 apps to find ones blacklisted by cybersecurity vendors, CNBC reported.
They discovered 661 blacklisted cryptocurrency apps across 20 app stores including Google Play and Apple's App Store.
Google Play offered the highest number of malicious apps with 272 available for download.
Hackers used phrases like "bitcoin exchange," "bitcoin wallet" and "cryptocurrency" to trick potential victims, the report said.
RiskIQ recommended investors thoroughly research possible exchanges and wallet apps before use. People should check the developer's name, user reviews and number of app downloads.
