Doomsday Clock Moved to Two Minutes to Midnight Amid Global Threats From Climate Change and Nuclear Tension
  • 6 years ago

On January 25, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced that it was once again moving the Doomsday Clock thirty seconds closer to midnight, to just two minutes away, noting the threat of climate change and nuclear warfare to humanity. The group cited increased nuclear tensions between the US and North Korea, and “hyperbolic rhetoric and provocative actions on both sides." It went on to say that a “decline of US leadership and a related demise of diplomacy under the Trump administration” was a deciding factor in moving the clock closer to midnight. The clock is now the closest its been in midnight since 1953. The project was devised in 1947 by a group of scientists who had had participated in the Manhattan Project and is seen as a symbolic indicator of the likelihood of human-caused global disaster.
