2017 Was One of the Hottest Years on Planet Earth NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration both shared their results on Thursday. 2017 was ranked the second warmest year on record by NASA and NOAA rated it the third warmest year on record. 2016 remains the hottest year since both organizations started recording the trends back in 1880. So far, the last three years, including 2015, have been the hottest of all time. In 2017, the global average temperature on land and in the ocean was around 1.62º F (0.9º C) above the 20th century average.
