He told those gathered, "we're ensuring the forgotten men and women of our country are never, ever forgotten again. Remember? The deplorables." It played well, and he continued, "The deplorables. We're all deplorables...that was not a good phrase that she used. Some things you'd like to have back." The "deplorable" reference goes back to September of 2016.
"To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right?" Hillary Clinton told a crowd in New York. "Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it."
The Trump campaign used her remark as evidence that she couldn't connect with the American voters.
