Original Song | Talk To Me

Musically, this was an anomaly for my typical writing process. I almost never topline, but in this case, I had been explaining chordal modification theory to a newer guitarist, and felt inspired to play around with sound diversity using only modified shapes of A and E chords. I ended up throwing in the occasional C7 for a second, but other than that, it’s all A and E (7, sus, etc.). After I was happy with a rhythm and guitar part, the words and melody came to me.

Fairly recently, I had a dear friend pass away. It wasn’t exactly a shock, but I was still quite taken aback. It had been several months since I had last called to check in with her. I felt overwhelming guilt and a strong pull to reconnect with those who are important to me. Over the next few days, I made a lot of phone calls and caught up with many wonderful people who I love dearly but don’t live where I can see them regularly.

Those conversations are the ones that make me realize, not only where their lives are at, but where my life is at. We laugh and love and learn together. It’s a conscious check-in, a sharing of information, and a celebration of collective history.

Life is made of moments. Those worth remembering, those worth sharing. I wanted to share this with you.

Lyrics:
what is life but stuff to talk about?
what Could i do without?
what would i do without you?

and so i called you up just now to talk about
how things are going now
but i could do without you acting cOnfused
i told you lately

i’m just trying to hold on to the moment
i’m just trying to hang on to what i know and
well, i know you know that
i’m just tRying to show you that i’ll own it
i’m just trying to show i only notice
life when i talk to you

what is life but stuff remembered now
and then forgot about
unless we talK about it and we share

and so i‘ll remember all your memorIes
that you have given me
now they belong to me and you and all who dare
i told you, lady

i’m just trying to hold on to the momEnt
i’m just trying to hang on to what i know and
well, i know you know that
i’m just trying to show you that i’ll own it
i’m just trying to show i only notice
life when i talk to you

so baby, talk to me, talk to me
live that life
then talk to me, talk to me
show me the light
just talk to me

yeah, talk to me, talk to me
about what you like
and talk to me, talk to me
so we don’t fight
just talk to me

i’m just trying to hold on to the moment
i’m just trying to hang on to what i know and
well, i know you know that
i’m just trying to show you that i’ll own it
i’m just trying to show i only notice
life when i talk to you

P.S. Audrey was a wonderful woman, and she was quite the talker. She also had a pet parrot who would always get into mischief and occasionally FaceTime me to show off his most recent prank.
