Original Song | Gilded Cages

I wrote this song sometime last week, but life was busy and I didn’t get around to recording it until today. This song was written around a specific Dadd9 shape up around the 7th fret. I threw a couple humorous G’s and a C6, and presto! You have your annoyingly basic GCD song, but with whacky shapes and all new voicings.
Lyrically, this song was inspired by two images. One is a photo I took of a bowl I bought this month. It’s a silver head, but it cuts off at the top of the forehead and mandible. Pretty soon after I saw it, I wanted to do something about mirrors or something with the line “my soul is chrome”.
In one photo that I took of the bowl (not the one I ended up using for this video), the lighting made half of the face look like a golden copper, while the other half reflected silver. It reminded me of a photo I saw a while ago of a golden ribcage.
With those images in my mind, the lyrics began, and I intentionally kept them very minimalistic and ambiguous. I wanted this song to make you think, but I wanted to inspire slightly different thoughts in every person, so . . . imma be annoying and not clarify further.
People tend to get so caught up wondering if they’re “right” when they interpret music. For me, if I made you think about something or feel something, then you’re listening correctly.
