Legazpi (Philippines), Jan 16 (EFE/EPA).- (Camera: Francis Malasig). Mount Mayon, which became active over the weekend in the eastern Philippines, was Tuesday spewing lava in fountains as thousands of people have been evacuated from the area amid fears of an imminent explosive eruption.

Lava began to flow down from Mount Mayon on Monday night and Tuesday reached 2 kilometers from the crater, with 75 lava collapse events recorded, located about 330 kilometers southeast of Manila, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology agency (PHIVOLCS) reported.

That institute maintained the alert level at 3 (critical) on a scale of 5, citing an imminent major volcanic eruption, although it could take days or even weeks to occur.
