On the outskirts of Kabul, young men train at Camp Morehead to join Afghanistan’s elite commandos and wear the maroon beret with pride. Afghan commandos from the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command, or ANASOC, are key to the future of Afghanistan’s security. They serve as the primary assault force and conduct 80 percent of Afghan National Army offensive operations.Training will continue and more graduations are expected in the coming months, with a goal of adding more than 4,000 new Afghan commandos by summer 2018. There are currently about 17,000 Afghan commandos.
