The Avatech SP1 Smartprobe is a new piece of avalanche safety equipment designed to be used by professionals in addition to current safety procedures. The probe is used to take measurements of the snow pack and quickly and easily provide information on the snow conditions. This is a new piece of tech that isn’t a risk assessment on its own and definitely shouldn’t be used by someone without the relevant know-how. The probes also feed the information into a network so that anyone who has one can see the snow conditions in a variety of areas, at different times in the season, so they can see how the snow pack has developed. All of this means more information for the guides to make informed decisions in the backcountry.
