Yr Lad's aesthetic is a unique, life affirming wall of sound that strikes an unlikely but graceful compromise between Picadilly, Southern rock, dreamscape and British New Wave. Marchman-Jones and company experiment with structure and timing while remaining impeccably poppy and haunting. Their distinct approach is particularly stark on "Sink," the closing track of the 2013 EP "Get Me Away From the Night." It's a linear, guitar blazing sonic foray with abrupt time changes, packed with searing yet delicate melodies. EP opener "Astride the Leaf-Queen" is breathy, suspended and medieval. You may have encountered Yr Lad as Urban Praise Band throughout 2013, or in a slightly different incarnation as Sir Greendown in 2012. Drummer Schneider and Marchman-Jones are the only two remaining members in the wake of the group, with locally beloved Firework Show's Bodtorf and Atwater filling out the rest of the string section. Marchman-Jones' compositions in Sir Greendown are used, while a group composition approach has been utilized on new outlines since brought to the table. The collective commitment is apparent live, as every member delivers nuanced, sophisticated performances, loyal to each song's demand. As long as Yr Lad persists, Charleston audiences will continue to be spellbound and refreshed, serenaded and
swooned.
