Arica is a city in the Atacama desert, the driest place on earth. The land might be dead around Arica but the Pacific ocean is alive. During the Chilean winter Arica is pounded by really good and really big surf. With world class spots like el Gringo, which breaks like Pipeline, and el Buey, which breaks like Waimea Bay, it's no wonder that they call this place 'The Poor Man's Hawaii'.
