With their luminous harmonies and dreamy sensibility, von Grey bring a new and edgy ingenuity to their latest EP Panophobia. In a departure from their earthy, folk-infused earlier work, the Atlanta-based foursome—made up of sisters Annika (vocals, violin, guitar, keys), Fiona (vocals, guitar, violin, percussion), Petra (keys, electronic percussion, background vocals), and Kathryn (cello, bass pedals, keys, background vocals)—delve into an ambient/electro sound marked by moody synth and heady beats. And though the classically trained musicians deliver more artfully crafted and sophisticated arrangements than ever before, Panophobia ultimately emerges as von Grey’s most raw and urgent offering to date.
The follow-up to 2014’s Awakening (praised by PopMatters as “strange, ethereal pop music, unencumbered by genre”), Panophobia was made in collaboration with Dan Hannon (a producer who’s previously worked with Manchester Orchestra and A Rocket to the Moon). While its title means “fear of everything” and reflects “the theme of insecurity or uncertainty threaded throughout the songs,” as Annika explains, the six-track EP in fact represents von Grey’s bold and undaunted progression into new sonic terrain. “In making the EP, we really broke our patterns and worked with different sounds and textures that viscerally connected with us,” Annika says. “In terms of the lyrics, we came up with an intimately personal batch of songs that come from real experience and tell some very painful truths.”
