Barrel Hounds Schooled by the Disabled in Puerto Escondido | Salty Conscience Project, Ep. 5

Salty Conscience is a team of Brazilian surfers on a mission to get great waves and explore the lesser-known corners of Latin America's premier surf spots. This week they are in Playa Zicatela, aka Puerto Escondido in southern Mexico. Puerto is among the heaviest and most intimidating waves in the world. Despite breaking over a sand bottom it has no channels, a pack of talented locals who aren't giving anything away, and often requires surfers to pull into ten closeouts for every successful wave.
But as you will see in this video the rewards for the patient and the talented are substantial. The crew gets barreled off their heads and when the water finally drains out of their ears and noses they head inland to the Piña Palmera rehabilitation center which offers educational programs to the local disabled population. It doesn't take long for the crew to learn that living with a disability, especially in the unique setting of a low income and highly indigenous community makes even getting a deep tube at Puerto seem like a cake walk.
