Singer-Songwriter Johan Meijer sings and plays the guitar since the end of the seventies – mainly in Germany, Holland, but at times also in Poland and Russia. Apart of many songs of his own, he sings songs of European colleagues, including singers from Turkey and Russia. Together with Diete Oudesluijs and friends - native speakers - he translates their songs into German or Dutch. It is not always easy to find the right words to fit the music! Or to express the original spirit into a ‘new’ song with the right textual and cultural content. So far, his label Nederossi has published about 10 CDs, in Dutch and in German – among them a series of Europeana, combining the songs from the continent that are his favorites with those of his own. Also, he tries to present the work of several very interesting singer-songwriters who have a public in their own country but are not yet known in Holland or Germany – f.i. CDs with songs of Gerhard Gundermann and Jaromir Nohavica; or a selection of Dutch artists in German.
Johan performs on his own, or with several musicians, partly depending on the venues – one of them Sergei Shurakov from St. Petersburg, who died 2007. Today, he mostly plays together with Jos Koning, who plays his violin in various styles – from Scandinavian and English folk to songs from the 17th century. At times, when it is possible to bring a band on stage, he asks some of the musicians that are present on almost all his CDs. They have all had their own influence on Johans musical style - from ballads to folkrock and blues.
Together with his wife Diete, he manages his own label Nederossi – music and texts, production of CDs and design of booklets.
