Daniel Woods Adds a Sit Start to 'The Ice Knife' | EpicTV Climbing Daily, Ep. 159

Daniel Woods has made the much sought after first ascent of 'The Ice Knife' sit start in Guanella Pass, Colorado. Dave Graham made the first ascent of the problem 2 years ago and reckonned it was top end 8b+ or 8c. The original problem was done from a standing start and Paul Robinson (who did the third ascent of the original problem) reckoned a sit start would add, 'some spice to it', and at least one grade.

Dave Graham's description of the problem --

'A majestic prow, jutting out of the forest on a northeast facing slope. A very technical compression climb and extra condition. Took me eleven days over two seasons, and it was a huge relief to final climb it. Difficult to grade, but one of the more challenging problems I have tried in a very long time, so we will see.'

It sounds as if the sit start was as tough for Daniel as the original problem was for Dave as Daniel took 13 days to do the route. He reckons this may now be the hardest problem he's ever done, which is saying something. Given that you've got to be pretty handy to get into the 8s in bouldering, routes like this are on another planet.

Daniel Woods is a bouldering specialist but is no slouch on sport climbing either, having climbed several 9a's. He's a 7 time American Bouldering Series National Champion, he climbed 8b+ at 14 years old, and has climbed some of hardest problems in the World, including "The Wheel of Life" in the Grampians of Australia and Chris Sharma's famous problem "Witness the Fitness" in Arkansas.
