On Saturday, senior members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party rejected the vision for a "United States of Europe" put forward by Social Democrats, with whom they look to form a governing coalition. Martin Schulz, the leader of the SPD, said on Thursday that his party would only gain support by offering a clear vision of Europe, and called for a United States of Europe by 2025.
