A week before the Congress begins the process to elect the party president, Maharashtra Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla has alleged that the party poll process is "rigged". He also said that he would only contest the election if "the system was genuine" claiming that delegates who form the election panel have been "handpicked" to favour Rahul Gandhi's candidacy. "I cannot contest a rigged election. If the system is genuine, then I will contest. It is a rigged election. it is a selection. Delegates who are going to vote for this election have not been elected as per the constitutional requirements. They have been handpicked.

राहुल गांधी को कांग्रेस की कमान सौंपे जाने से पहले पार्टी के भीतर से ही उनके खिलाफ आवाज उठने लगी है। महाराष्ट्र कांग्रेस के सचिव शहजाद पूनावाला ने राहुल गांधी को अध्यक्ष बनाए जाने को लेकर सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं। उन्होंने कहा है कि एक परिवार से किसी एक को ही पद मिलना चाहिए, चाहे वह कोई भी हो। उन्होंने अध्यक्ष चुने जाने की पूरी प्रक्रिया को ही पाखंड करार दिया है। दूसरी तरफ कांग्रेस में राहुल की ताजपोशी की तैयारियां जोरों पर हैं।
