The series chronicles the rise and fall of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who infamously escaped from prison twice and became the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. The new season will pick up eight years after the events of season one, and will cover Guzman's legendary first escape from prison. The drug dealer was arrested in June 9, 1993 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking and other offenses. During his incarceration, he bribed prison workers with cash brought in by associates, and effectively treated the institution as a hotel. Guzman continued to live an opulent life behind bars, while outside his drug empire grew under the direction of his brother Arturo Guzman Loera. In 1995, the US charged Guzman with drug trafficking and money laundering offences, however he remained imprisoned in Mexico.

Die neue Saison wird acht Jahre nach den Ereignissen der ersten Staffel anziehen und Guzmans legendäre erste Flucht aus dem Gefängnis abdecken. Der Drogenhändler wurde am 9. Juni 1993 verhaftet und wegen Drogenschmuggels und anderer Delikte zu 20 Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt. Während seiner Inhaftierung bestach er Gefängnisangestellte mit Bargeld, das von Mitarbeitern eingebracht wurde, und behandelte die Anstalt effektiv als Hotel. Guzman lebte weiterhin ein üppiges Leben hinter Gittern, während außerhalb seines Drogenimperiums unter der Leitung seines Bruders Arturo Guzman Loera wuchs.
