Man gets hand back after surgeons replace thumb with long toe

Plastic surgeons replaced the shattered right thumb of a youngster with his left long toe and helped him use his hand again.

The rare plastic surgery was performed after Sojan, 22, from Thalaserry in South India, lost his thumb, forefinger and the middle finger of his right hand in an accident two years ago.

With only the little and ring fingers remaining, the hand was of no use as he could not hold anything.

As the disability was affecting his daily activities, he approached Aster MIMS hospital in Calicut, Kerala, for help.

A plastic surgery team lead by Dr. Krishnakumar successfully replaced the left long toe of the patient in place of right thumb using cutting-edge microsurgery.

“It took about 8 hrs of complex backbreaking surgery to provide him with a new thumb but in the end, it is all worth it,” Dr. Krishnakumar said.
