Supporters gathered at a stadium in Nairobi on Tuesday, November 28, as Uhuru Kenyatta rang in his second term as president of Kenya.“You, the Kenyan voter, have been the most important player in the election,” the president said during his inauguration speech. “Everyone who voted played a role in strengthening our democracy: Indeed, today’s celebration is yours.”Kenyatta received 98 percent of the votes during the October 26 election do-over after the August vote was scrapped for not being “conducted in accordance with the constitution”. The controversial do-over received a turnout of just 39 percent.Opposition leader Raila Odinga, who is a member of the country’s marginalized Luo community, boycotted the October vote and has refused to acknowledge Kenyatta as president.Outside the stadium, protesters held a rally that was dispersed when police opened fire. At least three people were killed, including a seven-year-old boy hit by a stray bullet.
