MOUNT ST. HELENS IS RECHARGING ITS MAGMA STORES CAUSING EARTHQUAKE SWARMS. (IS IT ABOUT TO BLOW?)
  • 6 лет назад
Mount St. Helens has become one of the most monitored volcanoes on the planet. That year, magma - or molten material - pushed its way up from a reservoir deep inside the volcano, creating a bulge on the volcanos north side as the magma drew closer to the volcanos mouth. This push and pull is what causes earthquakes like those now occurring at Mount St. Helens.\r

The earthquakes have been measured at a magnitude of 0.5 or less and the largest when it was 1.3. The good news is, all of these occur at a depth between 1.2 to 4 miles below Earths surface and are too small to be felt above ground.\r

Since March 14, there have been 130 quakes reported by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, a scientific consortium that tracks such ivity. But even then, researchers have assured people that there is no need to worry about the volcano erupting in the near future. However, they agency says that the current Mount St. Helens quake swarm is telling scientists something. Researchers say there is no sign the volcano will blow anytime soon, and that so-called earthquake swarms have happened in the recent past. USGS volcanologists and seismologists are interpreting this swarm as a response to the slow recharging for the volcano, where new magma is rising up underneath St. Helens as it slumbers. The eruption, which was preceded by more than 10,000 earthquakes, killed 57 people, according to USGS.\r

The earthquake swarm located by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network is steadily becoming more frequent, but the tremors are not strong enough to be felt at the surface. So when you think about the ivity at any given volcano, you should not only concern yourself with what might be happening when the volcano is ually coughing stuff up (erupting), but also when, at the surface, things look perfectly calm.\r
\r
As we saw with Mount St. Helens between 1987 and 2004, a recharge can continue for many years beneath a volcano without an eruption.\r
