Sure, he has a flawless charm about him, but make no mistake, talent like Willard’s takes work. One of Willard’s most memorable film roles was as Buck Laughlin, the clueless and curt color man for The Mayflower Dog Show in the Christopher Guest classic, “Best In Show.” At Guest’s suggestion, Willard based the role on former big league catcher/announcer Joe Garagiola, and Willard went to work. “I would videotape myself,” Willard said of his preparation for the role. “I would start talking a stream of consciousness about dogs. I did that for several days, and then I would run back the tape to see what was funny. When I got on the set, I think I pulled out about half of them, and then the other half was what happened between me and Jim Piddock, who played the announcer. It’s a good thing to be remembered by.” He’s remembered for a lot more than that, too. Willard had already appeared in Guest’s “Waiting for Guffman,” but said many of his improv scenes were cut. ”(With ‘Best in Show’) I said, ‘I’ll end up on the cutting room floor. So I thought, ″I’m just gonna say every joke I can possibly think of.’ I didn’t censor myself. We filmed it in Vancouver, and, as soon I got there, Chris Guest and Eugene Levy invited me to dinner. I asked them, ’Have there been any Shih Tzu jokes? They said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘There will be tomorrow.’ ” Willard, a 55-year veteran of film, television and the stage, will appear at the Cleveland Comedy Festival’s 10-year anniversary celebration in “An Evening with Fred Willard,” on Dec 1. at Playhouse Square’s Outcalt Theater. WCPN “Sound of Ideas” host Mike McIntyre will host an unscripted conversation about Willard’s storied and award-wining career. On the silver screen, Willard has famously starred in “This is Spinal Tap,” “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” and “A Mighty Wind,” among many others. On television, Willard has appeared in “Roseanne,” “A Minute with Stan Hooper,” “Mad About You,” “King of the Hill” and “Modern Family,” the latter for which he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Willard is so old school and friendly, he didn’t even use a publicist for this interview. His wife cheerfully set it up from their house in Los Angeles, where Willard talked candidly about growing up in Cleveland, his love of the Indians, getting his start in comedy and working in the iconic Christopher Guest movies.
