House Speaker Paul Ryan stood by his tweet asking for prayers after the recent mass shooting at a Texas church, declaring that "prayer works."
During an interview on Fox News Monday, the Wisconsin lawmaker was asked about his post which stated, "Reports out of Texas are devastating. The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers right now."
"It's disappointing, it's sad, and this is what you'll get from the far secular left. People who do not have faith don't understand faith," Ryan told host Laura Ingraham about those who criticized the message and blamed Republicans for the tragedy.
"The right thing to do is to pray in moments like this because, you know what, prayer works," he further commented.
And many of his fellow Republicans including Vice President Mike Pence seemed to agree with this sentiment, as they sent out similar messages after the shooting as well.
Ryan's tweet itself attracted comments about the need for more gun control. "The country needs gun law reform. GOP is NRA puppet," one Twitter user noted.
But during the Fox News interview, the House Speaker pointed out that the shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley, should never have been able to buy guns with the laws currently in place.
