The Clio Cup, or simply Copa Clio, was a category of motorsport in Brazil with cars of the tourism category based on the production model "Clio RN", which became known as Clio II and later Clio II (restyled), using the engine K4M.

History

The origins of the Renault Clio Cup go back several decades when the French factory created the concept that changed the very history of the competitions of vehicles of the type "Tourism". In 1966, the company launched the world's first single-brand competition with the Gordini R8 model. The Brazilian Clio Cup was a direct descendant of that initiative, providing extreme disputes and crowded grids, being a very popular attraction in Brazilian motor racing for several years.

The Clio Cup appeared in Brazil in 2002 along with Formula Renault, constituting the Renault Speed Show. The category was one of the largest in the country, reaching 30 grids, but in 2006 the Renault Speed Show ended, and category almost went bankrupt. Without the official support of the brand, the category continued to resist until 2009 through an association between the pilots and preparers. In 2008, the category went on to use race-specific 2.0 engines, instead of the production 1.6 used up to 2007. In 2009 Renault announced its intention to re-support the category, but at that time, reflecting the international crisis , the support did not materialize, the Clio Cup went into decomposition and ended up failing, with the 2009 season being their last.

In October 2008, Paioli Racing, the biggest and most well-structured season of the championship, suffered a huge loss: at dawn on Monday (10/13/2008), the wagon that was transporting much of the material of the team's competition was totally consumed by a fire that occurred around one o'clock on the RS-118 highway, in the region of Gravataí (RS). "Fortunately there were no injuries, but we lost practically everything," said the team's driver and pilot: Marcos Paioli at the time.

Already being part of an event called "Itaipava GT Brasil" the last race of the Clio Cup was held on 11/29/2009.

The remaining vehicles continue to be used in regional competitions to this day.
