Footage has emerged of people taking to the streets of Barcelona to celebrate the declaration of independence approved by the Catalan Parliament today.

The video shows hundreds of protesters waving Esteladas (the pro-independence flag) as they walk from the Parliament building to Sant Jaume square.

Soon after the vote at the regional parliament, the Spanish Senate immediately voted to enact Article 155 of the constitution to impose direct rule over Catalonia.
