Meet The Group Rescuing Hurricane Maria's Abandoned Dogs From Puerto Rico

The Sato Project is evacuating dogs from Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

Even before the hurricane, an estimated 100,000 strays roamed the island. Now that Puerto Rico is focused on rebuilding, the dogs face an even more uncertain future.

Luckily, the Sato Project has recently evacuated 53 dogs from the island via a flight to New Jersey. They've saved more than 100 animals since September, and plan many more rescue missions. The group has previously spent the last eight years focusing on "Dead Dog Beach," an area notorious for abandoned dogs.

Much of that population didn't survive the hurricane. But now, thanks to Sato, there is some hope for the surviving dogs.
